Sustainable concept convinces - DGI Bauwerk general planning team Contract awarded for Biocentre for the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel - Science City on the "Bremerskamp" site

In a multi-stage negotiation process, the Berlin-based architectural office DGI Bauwerk, together with an experienced general planning team, was able to convince the jury with its sustainable concept for the new building of the Biocentre for the Biology Section for the purpose of research and teaching on the campus of the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel and was awarded the contract.

By means of a hybrid construction method, materials are used according to their strengths and properties. They fulfil specific functions while at the same time minimising the use of resources. The façade concept deals with the design of a DNA or genome sequence and achieves both a rhythmic and consistent façade grid without appearing too repetitive.

As part of Kiel’s new “Bremerskamp” district, the Biocentre combines excellent research buildings, high-quality study and recreational facilities, and student and urban living. With a usable area of around 16,500 m2 and a gross floor area of 33,000 m2, the new building is the largest component of the new development of the “Bremerskamp” area.

It is planned with a direct connection to the CeTEB – Centre for Basic Research in Translational Evolutionary Biology and will accommodate the Zoological Institute, the Institute for General Microbiology, the Botanical Institute and the Department of Plant Breeding of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences.
Teaching and seminar rooms, research and administrative areas as well as recreation and communication areas will be created for the biology courses.
In addition to the intended certification of sustainability (BNB silver) of all new buildings on the site, an overall concept for energy supply will integrate renewable energies.
The cost framework for the construction phases is estimated at 75 million EUR for the 1st construction phase and 50 million EUR for the 2nd construction phase for the cost groups 200-500.
