In the middle of the final spurt towards the finishing line of completion in December 2016, the team of DGI Bauwerk visited an exceptional construction site, the Castle Wittenberg, where the office is working for the ARGE Schloss Wittenberg since April 2015.
Detailed tours in three groups under the expert guidance of Mr. Stuve [Aade Jürgens/Stuve architects Kothen Dessau], the construction manager Ingo Bunk and the office manager Heike Bunk [DGI Bauwerk] brought astonishing findings: wall thicknesses up to 4.5 m, boulders in walls, the bottom of foundation up to 2.20 m thick, cupola ceilings with a thickness of 0.75-1.25 m, up to 2.5 m high filling-in and many more special features.
The design concept has to combine historic preservation, fire protection and a new use concept with library and visitor centre. The future appearance for this unique and in many aspects extraordinary space is already emerging based by the reduction of materials on concrete, lime plaster, wood and by using consistently oak for the built-in-furniture. An equally competent and lively guided tour to architecture and history of Lutherstadt-Wittenberge top off the sunny DGI-trip. It was not our last visit.
