Located in the Hamburg HafenCity the five-storey building including lecture halls, workshops, laboratories, offices, cafeteria and a library offers an attractive view over the Elbe river. Now nearly 2,500 students from the HCU study at the pulse of Europe’s largest urban development project. The new building is divided into two parts, which are vertically and horizontally closely linked by a transparent multi-storey hall. The concept of the University’s interdisciplinary work is reflected in the building design by a mix of functions. Complex building service requirements for the construction of laboratories and workshops, such as the installation of vibration-decoupled foundations for strength testing machines, had to deal with conflicting demands, like acoustic requirements, on the adjacent seminar and lecture halls. These highly technical trades had to be coordinated in such a way that a stringent construction process was ensured in compliance with tight scheduling.
