The Helmholtz Institute Jena is planning an extension to their existing building including offices and laboratories. In the open, one-phase competition, the design by DGI Bauwerk and hutterreimann Landschaftsarchitektur was shortlisted with the concept “Light and Matter”.
A solid pedestal [matter] forms the creative foundation, on which a transparent, openable pavilion with a roof terrace rests, providing a view of the valley below [light]. The building connects to the difficult topography of the hillside using multiple interconnected levels.
Quote from the competition jury: “The design succeeds with its consistent implementation of three storeys and high-quality outdoor spaces. Overall, it is a valuable contribution to the competition.
