New research building in Braunschweig: Center for Light and Environmentally-FriendlyStructures ZELUBA Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research, Wilhelm Klauditz Institute WKI

The Fraunhofer WKI scientists move into the new building designed by DGI Bauwerk and schneider + schumacher,
which combines hybrid and sustainable building systems.
The “Center for Lightweight and Environmentally Compatible Buildings ZELUBA®” was built on the campus of the TU Braunschweig in the immediate vicinity of the university’s building institutes, in order to expand the research capacities of the Fraunhofer WKI.
The scientists will move into the new building at the beginning of June 2021, where they focus on research and development of light and hybrid materials and structural elements including their environmental and fire performance. Wood in particular is used as a constructive, sustainable building material. The building itself thus reflects the principles of light and environmentally friendly construction. Renewable raw materials are used, which have advantages in terms of carbon dioxide emissions, weight and transport energy.
