The architectural office DGI Bauwerk, Berlin, and schneider + schumacher, Frankfurt/M, have won the European tender for the planning of the international accelerator facility FAIR [Facility for Antiproton Ion Research] in Darmstadt. The joint venture is called ion42. East of the existing GSI research facility a new accelerator complex ‘FAIR’ with a total of 24 buildings will be realized. This consists of an underground superconducting accelerator ring with a circumference of approximately 1,100 meters and is directly linked to functionally and structurally interconnected underground and aboveground plant sections [accelerator and experimental buildings, laboratories, and other operating and supply structures] as well as various transfer routes and storage rings. All research stations and storage rings are connected via these transferroutes and depend on the provided ion beam in order to function. This beam provides unprecedented intensities and energies for the connected research station.
