The plot is located in a central location close to the new centre of Berlin, the Potsdamer Platz. The office of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety consists of a new building and the listed old building, the former Prussian Ministry of Agriculture from 1916.
It got refurbished, refitted, and supplemented with an eight-storey reinforced concrete construction. Furthermore the remnants of the ‘Berlin Wall’ had to be integrated.
The listed building and the adjacent new construction contain 300 workplaces since the redevelopment. The project was implemented with a holistic approach regarding outstanding ecological construction technology and sustainability. The BMU is the first federal agency which has been realised a low-energy and passive houses.
