The eight-storey Hotel Sol Meliá has 364 rooms, four conference and meeting rooms, a 835 square metre ballroom, several restaurants and an underground car park. It is located in a prominent location next to the river Spree in Berlin-Mitte.
Special challenge: Excavation and foundation.
Due to its proximity to underground and suburban railway lines and the adjacent buildings, DGI Bauwerk was working in cooperation with the mode of transportation and accomplished a geodetic and structural preservation of evidence during the construction phase. The groundwater was lowered against the water pressure oft he Spree by gravity wells fort he 4,000m2 large excavation. The foundation is made with bored piles, displacement piles, micropiles and girder grids. For various components underlying the cellar, bulkhead boxes were excavated for the underwater deep parts and secured by an underwater concrete base. By this procedure the basement floors could be realised under the hotel complex.
